Chapter 286 The Book of Natural Disasters
In a daze, past memories flashed by like a revolving lantern, taking me back to a time when guardians were everywhere and anyone could ask me questions. At school, teachers could ask me questions anytime, and at home, my parents could ask me questions anytime. These were all ordinary, yet they all seemed to require an answer.
Calm down. Don't forget who you are. You're not even Klein Moretti right now. You're Gehrman Sparrow. This identity is fake; it's just an empty shell. You have no social connections. You don't have to accept any constraints or care about anyone's opinions.
"proficient."
Klein said expressionlessly, swearing that if there were any other questions, he might not continue answering; he was a mad adventurer, not a model student subject to teacher scrutiny.
"I need to consider your level of knowledge when deciding how to answer your question so that you can understand it more easily."
Edwina spoke calmly and deliberately, as if she were genuinely considering Klein's feelings.
You'd better really be... Klein looked at Edwina, who showed no remorse whatsoever, as if she were a teacher with a cold expression but a kind and persuasive manner, as if she simply wanted to better assess Klein's condition.
"The first question: Where do extraordinary sea creatures appear..."
Klein was speaking when Shael logged off again, seemingly very discreetly avoiding listening to Klein's private matters.
Why are you leaving?!
If you leave, how can I judge whether this female pirate lied to me based on your reaction?
He had just prepared his questions to deal with Mr. "Angel" and Lieutenant General Iceberg, but before he could even ask them, "Angel" had already run away.
Klein could only frustratingly inquire about the information he wanted.
Edwina answered the question with a hint of frustration.
The real world.
After spending a week in Bayam, Fors returned to Backlund via a teleportation device opened by Shael.
She had only told Hugh that she would be traveling for a week. Although she hadn't had enough fun yet, she was forced to end the trip so that Hugh wouldn't worry about her.
Not long after seeing Fors off, Xia Er heard a knock on the door.
Danitz was the first to knock on the door. It was clear that he was eager to see what could have broken the Iceberg Admiral's defenses. However, he seemed to have been warned beforehand, and he hesitated to speak several times. Klein, who was standing next to him, found this annoying, so he stepped forward, passed Danitz, and slammed the door shut, leaving the pirate outside.
"I think we need to talk."
Klein came to confront him, feeling that the angel was a major nemesis in his life. The angel had just caused him trouble in the Forsaken Land, but after shifting the blame to the Fool, he could leisurely teleport back and continue to linger in front of him.
He felt they needed to talk; they were both members of the Tarot Club, and the angel was constantly undermining them—what was going on?
"How did you know I discovered ancient elven ruins on Simim Island?"
Xia Er looked at Klein with a puzzled expression.
"No, I meant..."
Klein choked for a moment.
"How did you know I discovered traces of spirit activity?"
Shael looked at the prophet in surprise.
Can't you show me some respect?
At that moment, Klein even had the urge to slam his fist on the table in anger.
Did you respect Danitz outside the door?
"You didn't also find out that the Church of the Sea God in Bayam has some connection with the elves, did you?"
Xia Er gave her a look that said, "So you knew that too."
Klein paused for a moment, then changed the words he was about to say, "I've also discovered some problems with the Church of the Sea God."
"I think this sea god is at least a demigod. He was probably raised by the elves to restrain the Church of Storms. As you know, the elves inherited the Storm Path."
"You always say things like 'You know that too'," Xia Er explained to Klein.
Klein maintained his composed demeanor, nodding or expressing his opinion reservedly.
When Shael took out the Book of Calamities, Klein's gaze towards Shael changed.
You angel! I thought you were saying all this to invite me to explore the ancient elven ruins together, and then the contents of the ruins would be distributed according to our efforts and contributions. But you've already explored them all, and now you're just setting the stage for showing off your spoils?
Klein thought he had enough life experience, but it seems he underestimated the wickedness of human nature.
How can people be so evil?
"The things recorded here are written in Elvish. They are not difficult to understand, but they consume a great deal of spiritual energy."
"Aside from the text, some of the illustrations are quite beautiful."
Shael handed the Book of Calamities to Klein, then expertly brewed some black tea. He walked to the door, opened it, and let Danitz, who was standing outside as punishment, in.
Klein looked at the book in his hand with ancient Elvish script on the cover. His fingers unconsciously rubbed the surface. He hesitated briefly between continuing to reason with the angel and looking at the contents. Then, his brow relaxed and he opened the book.
He only glanced at it, and his relaxed brows furrowed again.
It was indeed written in Elvish, and the writing was very elegant. However, the strange patterns, symbols, and markings, when combined, were enough to make one feel irritable just by looking at them. One's fingers unconsciously tightened, but the irritation only intensified when one realized that even the pages could not be creased.
Klein suppressed his anxiety and frustration, trying to decipher something, and what he saw were some ancient poems.
These poems seemed to possess some kind of magic; his brow furrowed more and more, and the air pressure grew lower and lower. This momentarily affected the throbbing hunger, startling Danitz, who had just stepped into the living room. He had no idea what he had done wrong, but after hesitating for a moment, he said goodbye to Chael and very consciously closed the door and left.
"These contain some ancient poems, prophecies, fairy tales, and some occult knowledge hidden within that needs to be deciphered. However, they are quite difficult to read, so I didn't push myself too hard."
Xia Er gave a brief explanation, and while they were talking, she added a lethal amount of sugar to Klein's teacup.
"So you're using this to make things difficult for me?"
Klein's emotions were affected, and even though he was trying to restrain himself, he couldn't help but whisper.
"Have a cup of black tea to calm down."
Shael offered Klein a comforting word, easing his inner turmoil. Klein subconsciously apologized to Shael, then took a sip of black tea. The massive amount of sugar assaulted his brain, and the pent-up irritability seemed to be drowned by this excessive sugar.
"I already said, the characters are difficult to decipher, just look at the illustrations."
Ignoring Klein's twitching expression from the sweetness, Xia'er flipped to the most valuable section of the "Book of Calamities," where the exquisite illustrations were so lifelike they seemed ready to come to life at any moment.
