Chapter 145 The Long-Awaited Assassination
night.
On the ship, Klein wasn't used to life on board, and he couldn't sleep at all.
Inside the cabin, the candlelight was bright, casting long shadows. He looked at his shadow, feeling sometimes at ease and sometimes uneasy, but he just couldn't fall asleep.
Klein held a quarter-pence coin in his hand and tossed it again. He had repeated this process countless times, and each time the result was the same: no danger.
This feeling is heartbreaking. It's clear that Ambassador Intis also has an extraordinary person on his side who can interfere with divination, perhaps even through the same means.
It's really annoying when the ability to divine is suppressed.
What's even more heartbreaking is that the bodyguards he paid for disappeared without a trace after becoming part of the shadows.
If it weren't for the occasional movement of the shadow as a response, Klein would almost have thought that the other party had tricked him onto the ship and then run away, and that whether he lived or died, or whether he was assassinated, was none of their business.
It would be better if he were dead, then we wouldn't have to worry about being complained about.
On the bright side, at least the other party has a good reputation and didn't intend to run away with the money.
Klein had been trying to comfort himself in this way.
Based on his experience, he even judged that if there were to be an assassination attempt, it would definitely happen at night in such a closed room, which would be the perfect opportunity to carry out the assassination without attracting much attention.
Klein decided not to sleep tonight. According to his divination and judgment, Ambassador Intis would send someone to deal with him within the next day or two, and tonight was a very likely time.
And so the night passed.
Klein rubbed his temples, cursing Ambassador Intis in his mind over and over again. If he was going to assassinate someone, why couldn't he just do it quickly? Why was he so slow?
He sat there all night without moving.
Although I went to bed later, I was afraid of falling asleep, so I forced myself to sit up and stayed up all night, leaving me feeling quite exhausted.
"Are you still there?"
Klein asked the shadow at his feet in a low voice.
The shadow swayed slightly.
Are you sleepy?
Klein figured that if he hadn't slept all night, Shadow probably hadn't either.
The shadow beneath his feet swayed, and the shadows on the ground wriggled, revealing a row of Rune characters:
I slept very well last night.
Crunch!
Upon seeing this sentence, Klein felt his headache worsen.
He admitted that while he was guarding against a possible attack by Ambassador Intis, he was also guarding against this "bodyguard" whose credibility was unknown, but whose price was acceptable.
But this...
Even his employer didn't sleep, so how could this bodyguard possibly sleep? How could he possibly fall asleep?
"The money you gave is not enough."
The shadow on the ground writhed again, the meaning of which was simple: you're only offering three or four hundred pounds, and you expect him to be on duty 24 hours a day?
When Klein saw this, he suddenly wasn't so angry anymore. All his all-nighters hadn't been for nothing. If he had really fallen asleep, and the bodyguard had fallen asleep too, and someone had sneaked in at night, he wouldn't even know he'd been killed.
Klein didn't expect the guy in the shadows to care much about his safety. Even if the other party's extraordinary being sneaked in, killed him, and left, he might not even notice the extraordinary being hiding in the shadows.
I might be in danger, but he might be fine.
"I'm going to take a nap, can you keep an eye on things for me?"
Klein still felt he needed to get plenty of rest. The assassination attempt hadn't even started yet, and if he was exhausted now, he was doomed.
Although I still don't quite trust the bodyguard, there doesn't seem to be any other way right now.
"I need to eat breakfast."
The shadows on the ground writhed. Although Klein wanted to go straight to sleep, he still needed to eat breakfast, and shouldn't the employer pay for it?
"I see."
Klein was very reluctant, but he had to do as he was told. He left his room, went to the ship's restaurant, ordered a meal for himself, and packed an extra one to go.
When he returned to the room, before Klein could speak, the shadow beneath his feet spread out and wrapped up the packaged food. Without any chewing sound, the shadow returned to its calm state.
What extraordinary ability does it possess?
Klein was somewhat envious; he even felt that this ability was a bit excessive. But when he thought of Dunn's "dreamwalking" ability, Klein felt relieved. Perhaps only by becoming a Sequence 7 could he experience a small qualitative change.
Mr. Fool didn't waste any words this time; he went straight to sleep. He was still a little worried, but he felt he might still have a few more resurrections.
So I wasn't too nervous.
He didn't sleep for very long, only a few hours, before getting up to remain vigilant and guard against possible attacks.
But nothing happened.
Klein went out again and brought back some food for lunch, then continued to wait, but nothing came.
What happened to the assassination?
Mr. Fool was in a bad mood. He tried to divine again, but still couldn't find anything useful. The divination result was that there was no danger.
He longed to go above the gray fog, but with a bodyguard here, he couldn't perform the transfer ritual.
Although he could use the excuse of going to the restroom, it didn't seem to make much difference to Shadow. If the bodyguard were a woman, it would be fine, but this was clearly a man. If he were to spy on him, or discover... that the employer had fainted on the toilet, then it would be hard to explain.
Klein had no choice but to continue waiting, trusting that the ambassador wouldn't let him down, and that he had ruined the other party's plans.
If you kill someone, the other side will inevitably retaliate.
Thinking this way, I stayed up all night again, but still nothing happened.
At this moment, Klein had the urge to return to Backlund, rush to the Intis embassy, and ask Beckeran whether he had arranged for an assassin and if he could give him a straight answer.
But this is obviously impossible.
Klein could only keep reminding himself that this might be a way to lower his guard, make him anxious, and expose his weaknesses, but he still couldn't let his guard down.
After consoling himself like this, Klein could only endure the loneliness on the ship.
Because he hadn't anticipated things would turn out so strangely, Klein wasn't adequately prepared and hadn't brought any magazines for entertainment.
Or card games or something.
The cabin environment was rather oppressive, and Klein tried to chat with his bodyguard, but the bodyguard seemed very aloof and silent.
Klein would only shake his shadow when he felt it necessary; otherwise, his shadow would not react at all when Klein initiated conversation.
Beckeron, I hate you!
Klein was seething with hatred.
After another full day of this, Klein was really starting to feel the strain. It was already evening, and the sky was getting dark. The thought of having to stay up another night filled him with despair.
He really didn't want to stay in this cabin anymore.
He decided to have dinner at the ship's restaurant.
Meanwhile, on the nearby "sea surface," an invisible air suction tube sank into the water and disappeared.
